What Are Dentures?
Most dentures are made of acrylic material and can be fabricated a couple different ways.
- A conventional denture is made if all the teeth have been extracted and the gum tissues have healed.
- An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted. The gum tissues are allowed to heal under the denture.
A patient may need both an upper and lower denture, or one or the other:
- An upper denture is acrylic, usually flesh colored and it covers the roof of the mouth.
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe in order to leave room for the tongue.
The replacement teeth are made of plastic, porcelain or a combination of both. Dentures can be fabricated to fit over endodontically treated teeth or a complete denture can be attached to dental implants which allows for a more secure fit of the appliance.
Over a normal period of time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined in order to keep the jaw in a normal alignment. The jaw alignment will slowly change as the bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to the natural missing teeth. It’s important to keep up with regular dental examinations for denture wearers so that the oral tissues can be checked for any changes as well as disease.
