Dental Anxiety Is No Laughing Matter
We understand that a dental treatment can make our patients anxious and even downright scared. Whether you are young or older, it’s natural to feel stress or anxiety regarding an upcoming appointment, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting the dental care you need.
Thanks to nitrous oxide sedation, we can make our patient’s dental experience a relaxing and comfortable one. Yes, it’s possible!
Why are people fearful of the dentist?
Some patients have had bad experiences in the past or they don’t like the sounds and smells of a dental office. Other patients have very sensitive gag reflexes or they have general anxieties. The good news is that, with nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, we can safely ease our patient’s stress.
Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and administered through a mask fitted over the patient’s nose. It is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating gas that is breathed in. Given the gaseous nature of the sedative, it is fast-acting and puts you immediately at ease.
We are able to monitor and alter the levels of sedation so that the patient stays alert and can answer questions and follow directions. However, they will feel sleepy and very relaxed. It also relieves any pain within minutes after it is administered. There are no needles used, as in some other sedation methods, which adults and children can appreciate.
While under sedation, you may feel some effects such as lightheadedness, feeling “giggly”, tingling in the arms or legs, warmness throughout the body, and dreamlike thinking. Once the treatment is complete and the gas mask comes off, however, the sedation will begin to wear off quickly.
Nitrous oxide helps us deliver the best dental care possible to our patients who may feel like they have to avoid an appointment out of fear. If you have any questions about nitrous oxide sedation in Kewaskum, please call our office, and we will be happy to assist you.
